What is success? It can mean many things to many people. To some it is about amassing wealth. To others it can be about achieving a certain level of status and power in their career. To someone else it can be about gaining fame and respect. For me success comes down to mastering 5 key areas in my life:
• Financial Freedom
• Physical Fitness
• Mental Health
• Strong Relationship
• Time Management
Financial Freedom – For the most part we all want more money. I know I do….just being honest. Money gives us the ability to buy the stuff we want like a bigger house, cars, boats, a top notch education for our kids; the list goes on and on. However I am a firm believer that if your only goal is to have more money you will never be satisfied because you will never have enough. The more you have the more you will want. You will never be satisfied. It is also important to manage the financial resources that you have attained and put your assets to work for you and live below your means. I will write future posts on responsible financial management as this is a long time passion of mine.
Physical Fitness – What good is all the money in the world if you are not healthy enough to enjoy it? If you don’t feel good, lack energy, or just feel bad your ability to enjoy life will be significantly negatively impacted. A few years ago I was not feeling well so I went to the doctor and had a barrage of tests done. During the time I was waiting for the results I imagined all kinds of terrible scenarios and let me tell you nothing else mattered to me at the time. My concern for my health was all consuming. I watched both of my parents die at relatively young ages due to poor health. My mother was bed ridden for over 20 years.
I ended up being ok but this experience motivated me to try to live a healthy lifestyle that includes exercising daily and eating healthy. I know this is no guarantee that I will avoid serious illness but I certainly won’t invite more problems by eating poorly, filling my body with poisons, and sitting around all day. What good is all the money in the world if you are not healthy enough to enjoy it? Mental Health – I also believe that we can choose how we feel and how we respond to situations both positive and negative in our daily lives. I have been inspired by author Tony Robbins and others and have made the decision in my life to be happy and to find humor in my everyday life as much as possible. Let me tell you that sometimes this can be tough and this is the area where I personally struggle the most. But I have decided that I will choose how I feel and smile as much as possible.
Strong Relationships – What good is amassing large sums of money or finally achieving a long-term goal if you don’t have anyone to share it with? In my opinion there is nothing more important than having a great relationship with your significant other and great friendships. I don’t believe this means you need to have a huge number of friends but even a few great meaningful relationships can make all the difference in the world. A lot of people have died from loneliness and many more have made very poor life altering decisions without a foundation of solid relationships to help keep them in check.
Time Management – It’s true what they say “The one thing you cannot buy more of is time”. I missed out on some key moments with my young son because I was so consumed with work and business. As I look back this is something I definitely regret because you can never get those moments back. Around Halloween this past year I went to the “Trunk or Treat” party at my kid’s school. They frequently have parties like this but I rarely go due to other commitments. This time however my wife had an event after work so I decided to go. The look on my son’s face and how it lit up when he saw me is something I will never forget.
He had also entered a pumpkin in a jack-o-lantern contest. I had been so busy with work I didn’t even know he had made it until that moment. His pumpkin which was covered with stickers and glitter won third place in the contest. When they announced he had won he was so excited and yelled out “That’s my pumpkin Daddy!” This is a moment I will always cherish and is something that I normally would have missed. I decided then and there that I would take control over my time to do the things that are important for me and my family.
As I wrap up, achieving true success to me is about mastering these five areas in your life (financial, physical, mental, relationships, and time). It is my belief that striking this balance while working to grow your business will lead to true happiness and empower you to help others along the way.
