Memphis Go Getters –
There were two cars stuck in traffic, one was stuck on Poplar Avenue and another stuck on Union Avenue in the middle of the street.
The guy on Poplar got out of his Toyota Camry to find he had two flat tires. Immediately, he starts to try to wave people down for help but nobody stops.
Eventually, he tries to call some friends but nobody answered his call. So, he just stood there waiting for someone to come help him.
At the same time on Union Avenue, this guy was waiting at a red light and his car just suddenly dies. He jumps out of his old Cadillac Fleetwood to figure out what was wrong. Cars started to move around him to continue through the light.
At this time, he decides to put the car in neutral, places one hand on the steering wheel as he attempts to push his car forward. His car is heavy but he continues to push it inch by inch. Suddenly, this guy pulls up to him and shouts “Do you need some help” and he responds “Yes, I do”.
Now, the new guy starts to help push the car from behind and they both start to make some traction but they are still struggling to get momentum.
Out of the blue, another guy gets out of his car and says “Hey, let me lend you guys a hand”. Now, three guys are pushing the Cadillac Fleetwood and they start to build momentum and move the car out of the middle of the street.
Unfortunately, you and I both know so many people like the guy on Poplar who are stuck with tremendous ideas, ask for help but have not done anything on their own.
For example, they have not conducted any basic research, talked to any potential clients, don’t know their numbers to determine the financial feasibility of the idea.
All, they have is an idea and are stuck because they have not taken any action.
If you truly want help, you must take action on your own.
Over time, I have realized people are attracted to people who are working to make it happen for themselves.
At that point in time, that is when people (ie. resources/money) want to help you by adding to what you are already doing instead of becoming the main driving force behind you.
Yes, we all need help.
Yet, I believe your personal actions to achieve your goal cause the resources you need to move closer to you.
Like the man stuck on Union Avenue, he started to push on his own and then others recognized and joined in to help him.
Today, I just encourage you to not sit there idle but keep pushing towards your dreams because your support and resources are on the way.
PS. Last week, I had the chance to attend the Let’s Innovate Through Education – a non-profit focused on helping students start businesses. I had the chance to interview the Executive Director Hardy Farrow of LITEMemphis Check out – EP 25 Hardy Farrow of LITE Memphis
