Today, I saw an old friend of mine; I had not seen in a couple years.
We exchanged pleasantries catching up on old times with each other and our families.
She asked about my business and I informed her that we were doing well and going on 5 years in business.
I explained how we have seen tremendous growth and how much I had learned. She said wow how time flies and how it seemed like it was just yesterday that I told her of my new idea.
Then, I reminded her of an idea she had told me about several years ago. and asked if she had pursued it because I started to notice other people doing it.
She said no and how life (change in job, a move to another city and raising kids) slowed her progress down from starting her own business.
I can clearly understand and empathize with her decision to set her priorities. But then, she said “the kids are older now and I’m tired of coasting, I’m too young for that!”
Wow, I thought to myself how many of us today are coasting through life and even in our business.
Have you become complacent and think this is the best it will ever get for me?
Do you do just enough at work to not get fired?
Do you have skills and talent that you are not using?
Do you say, I’m good right where I am now and do not desire anymore?
If so, I consider you are coasting through life and not living to your full potential.
I have been there.
Me, I want to die empty, with all of my skills used up and knowledge transferred to someone else.I want to die empty, with all of my skills used up and knowledge transferred to someone else. Click To Tweet
Actually, I feel it is your responsibility to maximize your talent.
So, then I wondered how does coasting start and how do you stop it?
I believe coasting starts when you do the following:
We get into a regular routine every day at our job, business or relationships and it starts to become boring.
More importantly, it no longer interest you nor challenges you.
For example, you don’t want to learn anything new, do anything new or meet new people.
You start to think “I just prefer to stay where I am.”
You are coasting man!
Here are a few ways, I have tried to stop coasting and start living.
- I have challenged myself to learn a simple new skill every month
- I try to call friends instead of just checking facebook
- I focus on showing small tokens of appreciation to others
- My trainer switches up my workout routines.
- I’m signing up to do a crazy Spartan Race
What are you going to do switch things up in your life?
I believe the worst time to coast is when things are going good.
Yes, you are finally making some money, people know you and heard of your company.
You think you can coast now but actually this is when you need to dig deeper to take it to the next level.
I read an article about how boxing champ Floyd Mayweather still maintains his training schedule even when he does not have a fight scheduled.
You must stay focused and hungry.
NEVER GET COMFORTABLE
So, in business there is always something you can be doing to stop coasting and start growing.
Here are 3 things, I always consider for my business to never become complacent.
- What are your Customer / Employee saying?
I always seek customer / employee feedback good or bad to determine what things are working and to keep doing them. Also, I want to hear what is not working to determine what we need to stop doing. I’m sure you will learn a few things.
- Innovate or Get Replaced
You should always look at ways to improve your product or service. I like to test new approaches to our service to separate us from our competition. I encourage you to be creative and develop new offerings to complement your current core product or solution.
- Always Be Marketing
You can have the best product or solution but if people don’t know about you or heard of your business. Your business will not grow. So, always look for opportunities to market your business.
My grandma would say closed mouths don’t get feed. If you hungry, you need to open your mouth and let people know what you are doing.
I do wonder, if my friend would have pursued that idea what would’ve happen.
I know she would not be coasting or bored right now.
